Make sure to stop in designated stopping areas as the road is narrow and has many blind corners and to drive on the left side of the road, as well as obey all speed limits. It’s also possible to see whales from Apollo Bay beach, where they come as close as 100 metres offshore. The best time for whale watching is between June and September when humpback whales and southern right whales can be seen in the area.

If you’re interested in whale watching, Warrnambool is a great place to go. Southern right whales come to the area to calve every year between June and October, and there are several spots where you can get a good view of them. Logans Beach viewing platform is a popular spot for whale watching, and you can also sometimes see whales from the bluff-top walking track at Thunderpoint and off the breakwater.
